About the Attorney … Kathleen “Katie” Siemont

Kathleen “Katie” Siemont, a Bay Area native, attended Skyline College, and CSU Chico before attending George Washington University National Law Center in Washington D.C.  Katie was one of the first graduates of the Joint J.D./M.P.H programs, earning both a law degree and a Masters’ Degree in Public Health (focus on Administrative Medicine) at the same time by attending both law school and medical school simultaneously, earning both degrees in three years.

During law school, Katie volunteered at the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Dupont Circle, District of Columbia, one of the first HIV/AIDs clinics in the Country. Her master’s thesis in medical school addressed bloodborne pathogens and the legal requirements for doctors and medical employees to disclose their bloodborne pathogen status. This included a nationwide review of medical privacy laws for employees and patients while providing or receiving services in a medical treatment setting. She has worked with the American Psychological Association, the Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior. She held a Secret level security clearance while working for the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) division of the Department of Justice.

After Washington DC, Katie returned to the Bay Area, and worked for over twenty years as an Insurance Defense attorney with a large statewide firm, focusing on subrogation and Worker’s Compensation Defense. Katie has litigated thousands of cases, represented large corporate accounts, Insurance companies, and State and County self-insured entities. As a selected panel attorney, Katie also represented major corporations including McDonalds franchises, Coca-Cola, and Wal-Mart. She has two cases which went to the California Court of Appeals. One of which was the right of same-sex partners to receive payment for caring for a spouse injured at work. This decision resulted in a $10k per month payment by the insurance carrier for the rest of the worker’s lifespan, along with a retroactive payment for services totaling over $600,000. Katie has deposed literally hundreds of people, including medical treaters, employers, and physicians. She has a keen eye for human nature, and can predict opposing counsel’s behavior in high conflict settings. As a previously certified Legal Specialist in Worker’s Compensation Law, she understands the ins and outs of Medi-Care, Medi-Cal, Special Needs Trusts, Social Security and SSDI. She is admitted to practice law in both California and the District of Columbia.

With the passing of her own parents, Katie shifted her focus to Probate and Estate Planning. After dealing with attorneys who failed to explain topics, Katie decided to take a different approach. She will explain things to you clearly and in easy to understand language.
For the past ten years, Katie has volunteered with the Vallejo Lawyers in the Library pro bono legal assistance program, providing free pro bono legal services every month to the public. She also volunteers for the Benicia Lawyers on the Line Senior Legal Assistance program, helping seniors with legal issues. Both programs are free to the public and open to all residents of Solano County.

In her spare time, Katie enjoys gardening and performs in a children’s improv theater group. She currently resides in Napa with her two amazing and beautiful twin daughters, multiple animals (chickens, rabbits, quail) and a very spoiled, tennis-ball obsessed dog.

Katie will tell you the truth about your situation, and give you the best advice on how to move forward.
